Edible + Medicinal Plant Walk: Chestnut Ridge Park

$20.00

Saturday, June 13th

10:00am—12:30pm

Chestnut Ridge Park, Shelter #4A (shelter map)

  • Optional: bring bagged lunch and stay after to chat

6121 Chestnut Ridge Rd, Orchard Park, NY 14127

Explore the diverse plant life at Chestnut Ridge with Community Herbalist Sarah Sorci. We’ll get acquainted with WNY plants that prefer sunny lawns, water’s edge, shady woodlands, and the spaces in between.

Beginner-friendly—and experienced attendees are welcome to share their knowledge if they’re so moved!

On this leisurely stroll, we’ll discuss:

  • Plant identification

  • Ways to use each plant in cooking and/or as a remedy

  • Tidbits about the plants’ medicinal properties

  • Traditional uses and cultural stories

You’ll leave feeling comfortable identifying a range of useful plants, and you’ll know whether there are poisonous look-alikes to watch out for in our region.

We’ll discuss environmental contamination considerations when harvesting wild plants, as well as sustainable harvesting practices.

Registration fee: $20.

If you don’t have childcare, feel free to bring your kids at no additional charge. Adults are the intended audience, but kids often enjoy themselves, too!

I suggest arriving at least 10 minutes early. It may take several minutes to arrive at the shelter from the entrance, depending on which gate you use.

BRING:

  • Notebook if desired. Taking photos is welcome! This might help you remember the plants we discuss.

  • Sun protection

  • Water bottle

  • Comfy walking shoes

  • Bagged lunch (optional)

*Do you use a wheelchair, walker, or have other needs related to a disability? Please get in touch so we can make this event work for you!

WEATHER: Since we have a shelter to retreat to, I plan to run the event rain or shine. If the forecast looks rainy, I’ll bring a selection of plant cuttings to examine, taste, and discuss together. If a thunderstorm creates a safety issue and. we cancel or end early, you’ll be refunded for what you miss.

If storms are predicted, check your email before leaving for the event for a cancellation notice. (I’ll email by midnight the night before if we cancel.)

No harvesting is permitted at Chestnut Ridge Park.

Refund policy: The number of registrants determines whether I run the class and the quantity of supplies/samples to bring (if applicable). For this reason, I’m typically unable to give refunds to those who can’t make it. If unexpected circumstances arise and the class cost is a burden, please feel to reach out to me.
