Classes & Events

Educational workshops are the bread and butter of Sweet Flag Herbs. In western New York, as in nearly every community, there is an abundance of medicinal and edible plants growing in every lawn, sidewalk crack, and wooded area. Sarah offers workshops about identifying, sustainably harvesting, and using these plants.

Sarah has experience offering plant-based workshops for individuals of all ages and ability levels, including differently-abled individuals. If you are interested in scheduling a workshop or would like more info, visit the Contact Page to get in touch.

Wild Wellness (JCC North)

Jamestown Community College, North Campus (Dunkirk).   4 Wednesdays.

For as long as humans have existed, we have relied on plants for remedies and food. Sarah will introduce you to a range of common local plants and how they can be used medicinally. This class will cover the basics of herbal medicine and medicine making; explore the science behind the effects of various herbs; and introduce the plants “in person” as participants learn to identify them. Participants will prepare and take home an herb-infused vinegar and oil, as well as the supplies to prepare their own herbal tincture. Many samples and handouts are included. No experience necessary.

Cost is $69, which includes all supplies, handouts and samples.
Visit https://www.sunyjcc.edu/ceto reserve your spot.

Week 1: Wild edible and medicinal greens (nettles, chickweed, dandelion, clover). Prepare a mineral-rich, herb infused vinegar using local/seasonal greens.

Week 2: Immune system/cold and flu supportive herbs (lemon balm, elderberry, boneset, mullein). Discuss tincture-making, and take home supplies to make your own herbal tincture.

Week 3: Liver and digestive support (burdock, yellow dock, dandelion root, chicory). Discuss appropriate tea preparations for roots and barks vs. leaves and flowers. Sample several herbal teas.

Week 4: Herbs for the skin (plantain, violet, yarrow, witch hazel). Prepare an herb-infused oil for topical use.
